BRIGHT & BOLD TREE TOPS - Bespoke Lampshade

After re designing her kitchen/dining room, Head Teacher Laura Thomson, was keen to unify these two distinct areas using lighting, strong color and organic motifs. A big fan of her garden, which the kitchen overlooks, Laura wanted to bring a suggestion of nature into the home and I was delighted when she invited me to create her center piece lampshade.

I visited during the final stages of the refurbishment to look at the layout, light source, placement of the light fitting above the table and to discuss in more detail the size, color and theme of the project.

Working with a bright green wall tile as color reference from the kitchen along with red and orange as Laura's agreed color palette I then mocked up some initial design ideas in photo shop.

It's a great way show the customer visual examples and help them narrow down the design elements like motif type, scale, color balance and predominantly let you know if your moving in the right direction with them.

To help further I am able to present the designs as lampshades to give a stronger visual representation.Laura wanted to go for the layered tree designs which were taken from photographs at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. This design resonated with everything she was hoping to achieve, it brought organic and natural forms inside the home and had a reference to a local place she loved additionally bringing a pop of bright color that mirrored the tiles she had chosen as a backdrop to her new minimalist kitchen.

I prepared 4 different sample fabrics ranging from white to cream background with subtle surface finishes in heavier linen styled fabric and smooth satin finish fabric. Once the fabric choice was selected I was able to go ahead with screen and ink prep before printing and assembling the finished Lampshade.
