COOL GEOMETRIC CURTAIN

This was a lovely large scale print commission for writer, policy analyst and researcher Susan Elsley based in Portobello, Edinburgh. Susan had initially connected with my work during the Cloth 18 exhibition at Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh. They were looking for an original fabric for curtains in their guest bedroom. The brief was to create a contemporary aesthetic appeal, freshen and brighten a room that had little natural light and use the curtains as a functioning art piece. Susan had already been attracted to a sample piece I had in the exhibition and after several consultations about scale, fabric quantities and whether to hand print or digitally print the 10 meter length, the preference was to have a hand crafted approach to the project.

Large scale screens were prepped, color palette was matched and mixed and the 10 meters of crisp, clean fabric was carefully stretched out in 3 individual lengths on the print table. Working with such large screens is as physically challenging as it is creatively but the print layout was executed with precision and care over a 3 day period.

Having years of sewing experience and teaching home furnishings, the assembly of the curtains was also included in the design proposal. Again, the quantities, scale and weight of the printed fabric plus lining fabric was a physical test at times and keeping everything clean and crisply pressed was a priority.

The print, construction, and installation of the lined curtains was completed within a 3 week period. Including consultation, ordering of materials and fine tuning the project timetable the entire commission took around 8 weeks from beginning to completion.
